290 Lankan refugees arrive in Salem, Namakkal districts today

SALEM: A total of 290 Sri Lankan refugees belonging to 72 families arrived in Salem and Namakkal districts on Tuesday.

In Salem district, 193 refugees including 60 women, 38 boys and 28 girls belonging to 47 families arrived in Attur. Revenue officials received the refugees and housed them in the Anna Kalaiyarangam.

The officials said after completing formalities, the refugees would be temporarily accommodated in the community halls in Papanaickanpatti, Gopalapuram, Ammampalayam, Thandavarayapuram and Aaragalur.

Collector N. Mathivanan directed the officials to provide all assistance to the refugees.

In Namakkal district, 97 refugees including 41 women, 16 boys and 9 girls belonging to 24 families are temporarily housed in the municipal marriage hall in the town. A total of 374 refugees who arrived here earlier, are already housed in the hall.

Collector G. Sundaramurthi ordered officials to accommodate the refugees in the camps in the district.

He asked them to enrol the children in schools.

Accordingly, 111 children were admitted in three schools on Tuesday, the officials said.
