Magadesan Peruvazhi

Due to the establishment of state and the expansion of trade, cities sprang up and many such cities were interlinked with passages and highways that were crucial for the exchange of goods and commodities. We come across many such highways in inscriptions belonging to the Chola and Pandya periods. There are some inscriptions, engraved on either boulders or slabs, which served as name boards. For instance, we may refer to the Rajakesaripperuvazhi (10th century CE) at Cundaikkamuttur (Coimbatore District), which probably led upto Kerala or the ancient Chera country and Magadesan Peruvazhi (13thcentury CE) at Aragalur (Salem District) – the high way, which led to Kanchipuram. By the side of such highways, there were milestones (Katakkal in Tamil) which mentioned the distance from the place, where such a milestone was located to the prominent place or mercantile centre Atiyaman Peruvazhi Navar thavalattukkuk katam 27. This is the highway named after Atiyaman. The place Naval tavalam is at a distance of 27 katams. Similar 29 katam stone also noticed

Toddy tapping movement

Dear Sir/Madam,

We suggest Palmyra (Borasus Flabellifur) and wild dates be given their due importance and be chosen for a development initiative. They grow in sizeable area of land close to the river and tank beds consisting of almost impenetrable naturally re-grown indigenous forest vegetation, a great asset to the local ecology and natural beauty.

Hunger and malnutrition does not occur naturally but man made due to mindless and selfish exploitation of natural resources by the shenanigans of the political parties who treat food as a political weapon. We strongly believe that the objective of the seminar shall be incomplete if peasants are left out and their significant contribution to rural economy and food security are not recognised.

Programmes of pioneering associations such as yours who work towards bringing out such natural resources should effectively be promoted to inculcate relevant knowledge of modern production techniques and better productivity shall eradicate hunger and enable food production sustainable which ensures food security.

The principal product of the Palmyra is undoubtedly the Toddy or Arrack. This is an exciting drink of the country. It is a sugary juice that makes a tasty and health boosting drink when freshly drawn before sunrise. People take this in large doses in the morning and it has a laxative effect. The `Palmyra Palm Tree` have a lot of medicinal uses. If the fresh Toddy is mixed with rice flour and gently heated until it ferments, it makes a precious stimulant poultice. The fruit is popular as aperients and the ash attained after burning the flowers is used in prescriptions for biliousness. Age and sex of the tree varies significantly nature of timber of the `Palmyra Palm Tree`. While young, the wood of the tree is soft and hardens slowly. However, the heartwood remains soft. The female tree produces much superior wood than that of the male. It has quite a few uses that include making house and veranda posts, water gutters etc. The life the wood is approximately 300 years which is better than even Iron.

Tamilnadu state in particular has banned tapping and drinking of toddy. As toddy tapping and domestic marketing as organic natural food drink is the birth right of our native farmers and tappers, the state’s intervention is unwarranted.

We would like to bring to your attention that Palmyra and wild native date trees are still grossly underdeveloped and we suggest the following steps:
  1. We suggest setting up of a board for Palmyra and native wild date trees in the line of the coconut board.
  2. An integrated approach to develop Palmyra based Agro Processing zone even by setting up SEZ will certainly give stimulus to the food processing industry and also provide an easy access to production of value added products at affordable cost with moderate financial outlay.
  3. Palmyra products such as coir of organic fibre and number of handicrafts shall properly be treated to make them export worthy which create a huge job potential.
  4. All steps and coordinated efforts be taken to substitute Palmyra and coconut juices for IMFL.
  5. We strongly recommend a seminar in near future by your association in Chennai. It will provide an opportunity to explore the possibility of utilising 2009 organic fibre year as announced by the UNO recently.
  6. The ban on use of Toddy as drink must be lifted in Tamilnadu and it should be freed like other trades since toddy is coming under food drinks according to stipulations on use of alcoholic substances as beverages or food as per article 47 of Indian Constitution.
  7. Wishing the forum all the success for 6th Global Knowledge Millennium Summit 2009 with theme of Global Hunger, Food Security and Safety.
